about the artist

Douglas Piper was born in Greenville, SC native born in 1986. Having grown up both next to the mountains and in close proximity to the Atlantic Ocean his love of the outdoors grew tremendously. Throughout his life, Douglas has always been fascinated by the magnitude of the mountains and ocean. Naturally, he was initially drawn to photography and graphic images. The interest was cultivated during his teenage years and further developed when he met his now wife, who is an artist.

After meeting his wife, Douglas delved into linoleum block printing as a way of spending more time as she worked on her own artwork. He started incorporating found paper, maps and books as it was all he could find to print on. He used the practice of printing on the vintage paper to spark memories of the viewers own past travels and experiences.

Douglas and his wife Meredith began to collaborate their love for the outdoors and art together to create “A Marriage of Mediums”. An art collaboration that features both of their work into a single pieces of art. Douglas lives and works in Greenville, SC surround by the mountains, sea and his artistic wife Meredith Piper.

Artist statement

Douglas Pipers’ linoleum block printing weaves together layers of found paper, graphic block prints and handwritten text to create a vintage feel. He collects a variety of found paper, maps, books and letters to create unique linoleum carving collages. For his work, Douglas draws inspiration from his adventures; camping, hiking & biking to places such as the Colorado Mtns and the AT, exploring the local lakes and the Carolina Coast, as well as running around the mountains of his home state of South Carolina. Old  weathered cabins, well worn backpacks and seasoned sailboats are all layered on old maps to lure the onlooker in and hopefully spark memories of their own past travels and experiences.

Douglas Piper currently lives and works in Greenville, South Carolina. He travels constantly and spends much of his time in the outdoors, both of which impact his work.
